Material Standards and Anti-Corrosion Treatment Processes for Aerospace Fasteners

Aerospace equipment puts extremely high requirements on fasteners in strength, temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. Different application areas adopt corresponding material standards, matched with professional anti-rust surface treatments to guarantee long-term stable performance under complex high-altitude environments.

1. Main Materials & Relevant Standards of Aerospace Fasteners

Titanium Alloy (For Fuselage & Cabin)

Standards: ASTM B348, AMS 4911

Advantages: Light weight, high specific strength, excellent atmospheric and temperature resistance.

Applications: Fuselage connecting bolts, lock nuts and rivets, the most widely used material for civil aircraft.

Inconel 718 Superalloy (For Aero Engines)

Standard: AMS 5662

Advantages: High temperature resistance, creep resistance and thermal oxidation resistance, capable of enduring high-temperature airflow inside engines.

Applications: Fasteners around combustion chambers and turbines of aircraft engines.

4340 High-Strength Alloy Steel

Standard: AMS 6322

Advantages: High tensile strength with controllable cost.

Disadvantage: Prone to oxidation and rust, requiring full anti-corrosion coating.

Applications: Load-bearing connectors for landing gear and fuselage structures.

2. Common Anti-Corrosion Processes for Aerospace Parts

1. Cadmium Plating

Classic aerospace anti-corrosion solution with outstanding salt spray resistance, widely used on load-bearing carbon steel bolts with strictly controlled coating thickness.

2. Anodizing (Exclusive for Titanium Alloy)

Preserves substrate strength while improving acid, alkali and wear resistance. Different oxide layer thicknesses are selected for internal and external cabin components.

3. Stainless Steel Passivation

Forms a dense passive film by removing free iron ions on the surface without coating peeling risks, ideal for tiny precision aerospace standard fasteners.

4. Vacuum Aluminizing

High-temperature anti-corrosion treatment specially designed for engine fasteners, no peeling or failure under long-term high temperature.

3. Material & Process Selection Guide

- Normal temperature cabin area: Titanium alloy + anodizing

- High-temperature engine zone: Inconel 718 + vacuum aluminizing

- Load-bearing carbon steel structures: 4340 alloy steel + cadmium plating

- Small precision standard fasteners: Stainless steel + passivation
